Recently, the computer game 1378(km) has not caused too much public stir. Yet the memory of the game, labeled a 'DDR shoot-em-up' by BILD, remains in many German minds. Especially among the younger generation, the serious game has found its place, prompting many to engage further with German history. The game was designed to provoke reflection, and it entered history as such. The plan, however, had been to trigger this discussion through the actual gameplay mechanics rather than the surrounding media scandal. Nevertheless, the goal of developer Jens M. Stober was more than achieved, and the German serious game 1378(km) found its home not only on the computers of hundreds of thousands of players, but also in museums and multiple academic research papers. Thus, the memory of this artistic attempt to process a brutal part of German history in game form remains preserved for future generations.
